How to reduce NVH in the automotive industry

Discover the best automotive materials and products available on the market to successfully reduce NVH.

NVH stands for “noise, vibration and harshness” and is a common problem found in moving mechanical objects such as vehicles, tumble dryers, and power tools. While NVH is associated with any moving object, particular attention applies to the automotive industry.

It’s particularly important in the automotive industry, with subpar NVH seriously impacting the driving experience and vehicle performance. Therefore, automotive manufacturers must consider NVH in all aspects of the production process to make the best product possible.

The complete NVH guide for automotive solutions. Discover the best materials and products available on the market to successfully reduce NVH.

What causes NVH?

To accurately assess NVH requires examining each separate element in isolation:

– Noise
– Vibration
– Harshness

In cars, NVH is caused by external and internal factors, such as:

– The mechanical and electrical systems inside the car
– The engagement with the road
– The force as it travels through the air

Regarding noise, NVH components are found commonly in the following areas:

– Engine
– Transmission
– Tyre contact
– Road surface
– Brakes
– Wind noise
– Motors

While the vibration and harshness contributing to NVH in mechanical components affect:

– The steering wheel
– Seats
– Armrests
– Rear-view mirrors
– Pedals
– Floor

Why is NVH important?

Remember the old saying, “Before you buy, give it a spin around the block.” Now, this expression applies directly to the smoothness of the ride as much as the vehicle’s performance.

As a crucial component of car manufacturing, automotive manufacturers spend enormous amounts on NVH materials and products every year. So much so that the global automotive NVH materials market is projected to grow from $10.96 billion in 2021 to $16.93 billion in 2028  at a CAGR of 6.4%.

Establishing the ultimate driving experience depends on having the best NVH reduction to match the car’s performance. The faster and more powerful the car, the more difficult it is to reduce NVH to a level of ultimate comfort.

One way to reduce NVH is installing a muffler or sound deadening material at the source of noise or vibration. Tuned vibration can also be applied to dampen noise and absorb vibrations. Essentially, automotive manufacturers must consider NVH in all aspects of a car.

For example, Ramsay Rubber provided an NVH solution to Jaguar Land Rover for plastic injected door fender components. After assessing the issue, we recommended a fabricated adhesive foam seal comprised of semi-closed-cell Nitto E1010 foam and laminated with a closed-cell R230/10 EPDM sponge.

Proven NVH materials and products

Nitto foam

As previously mentioned, Nitto foam is an excellent NVH and sealing solution due to its durability and water resistance. It’s a semi-closed-cell foam attributed to a wide range of applications in the automotive industry, working well as a sealing solution with superb chemical resistance to acids and alkalis.

Nitto foam products are available in various shapes and forms, including:

Kaiflex EPDM

Kaiflex EPDM operates as a class O material to provide excellent insulation. A soft cell structure absorbs sounds, offering an incredibly suitable NVH solution. As an insulation foam, Kaiflex offers an impressive temperature range, thermal insulation and sealing properties against air, dust, and water mitigation. It’s perfect for car interiors. Kaiflex insulation is also:

  • Highly resistance to oil
  • Available in custom shapes and sizes.
  • Flame retardant

The various Kaiflex product ranges include the following:

Non-woven insulation

Non-woven insulation materials are a renowned solution to NVH. The fabric is made from staple fibres combined with chemicals and is extremely lightweight.

Synthetic felt insulation

Synthetic felt insulation is ideal for NVH solutions consisting of natural polyester, acrylic and other made-made fibres bound together using barbed needles. It provides a dense insulation solution and works for various NVH purposes as a high-performance material.

Industrial felt insulation

The materials in industrial felt insulation have small scales to combine the fibres through a controlled application of heat, moisture and pressure. It provides excellent NVH properties and is self-extinguishing with good sealing properties against dust and air.
